Self-hosted BranchRunner, in release validation

The first release is self-hosted on Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS. Pre-release builds are being validated now; public release artifacts follow once acceptance is complete. Cloud and the VS Code extension come later.

Read the exact versioned artifact’s LICENSE and package map; final release parameters and legal review remain open. View legal status

·Advanced role-based access control
·SCIM provisioning is planned for Enterprise
·Organization-wide policies and budget hierarchies
·Long-term audit and evidence retention
·Worker pools, private networking and dedicated infrastructure

Nothing in the orchestration model is withheld from Community. The Enterprise list is about organizational administration, deployment and support.

Who it is for

Individual developersRun agents against your own repositories on one machine, with real isolation.
Small teamsShared tasks, shared workers, shared evidence, without buying a platform.
EvaluatorsRead the source, test the isolation model, then decide about Cloud or Enterprise.
Organizations that operate their own toolsKeep code, data and credentials inside your network, with no third-party control plane.

System requirements

Operating system
Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04 LTS; more platforms planned
Minimum host
2 CPU cores, 8 GB RAM and 60 GB free disk; 4 CPU cores and 16 GB RAM recommended
Scaling
Add CPU, memory, storage, or workers as concurrency and repositories grow
Software
Installed by the installer: Docker Engine with Compose, PostgreSQL, nginx and TLS renewal
Database
PostgreSQL 17 in a container the installer runs on the same host
Credentials
A GitHub App installation and two model providers: the reviewer must come from a different provider than the implementer
Network
Outbound access from workers to your providers, inbound only where you expose the UI
Single host
Control plane and one worker can share a machine for evaluation

Planned installation route

  1. 01
    Run the published installer

The 1.0.0 installer, its checksum and the tested quickstart command will be published with the 1.0.0 release. No command is presented before it can be tested from a clean host.

  2. 02
    Connect a repository

Add a Git provider token, select a repository, and let the worker build its local mirror.

  3. 03
    Configure agents and tools

Point roles at your model providers, add MCP servers, and set the permissions each role may use.

  4. 04
    Run your first task

Write an objective or import an issue, agree the requirements, and watch the run provision its workspace and open a pull request.

What you operate yourself

You operate your installation. BranchRunner does not provide support or an SLA, backups, retention services, or deletion services for this self-hosted release.

Infrastructure

Hosts, disks, Docker, networking and the capacity your concurrency needs.

Upgrades

Reading release notes, applying migrations, and choosing when to move version.

Data lifecycle

Backups, restore drills, retention, and deletion across your database, artifacts, snapshots, and external storage.

Security

Access to the UI, secret storage, egress rules, patching and monitoring.

Agent and model compatibility

Community uses your credentials, with no proxy in between. Roles are configured per workflow, so a session can use one provider for planning and another for implementation.

License

The current license map assigns BSL 1.1 to the web application, API, worker and agent wrapper, with an Additional Use Grant for internal production self-hosting. @branchrunner/contracts is Apache-2.0. Other product files follow the product repository’s root license unless explicitly mapped otherwise or covered by third-party terms. Future SDKs, examples and integration packages need their own mapped license entry. This page is a summary, not a license grant.

Licensing FAQ

Can I use BranchRunner commercially?

The ratified BSL Additional Use Grant permits internal production self-hosting, subject to the exact artifact’s LICENSE. The listed third-party service and redistribution uses require a separate commercial license; this page grants no additional rights.

What is included in a public release?

Not yet. Pre-release builds are in validation. The first public release targets self-hosting on Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS; Cloud and the VS Code extension are outside its scope.

Can I modify it?

Read the exact artifact’s LICENSE and LICENSING.md for modification and redistribution terms. Product BSL terms, Apache-2.0 contracts and third-party terms apply to their respective components.

Does BranchRunner see my code or telemetry?

No. A self-hosted deployment talks to your Git provider and your model providers. Optional usage reporting is off unless you switch it on.

What happens to my data if I move to Cloud?

Nothing is migrated automatically. You connect repositories to the managed control plane and re-import the work items you want to continue.

Who can I ask for help?

No support service or SLA is provided for this self-hosted release. You operate, maintain, back up, and recover your installation. Security reports remain welcome through the published security-reporting channel.
